The Essential Ingredients
- Ground Beef: Also called ‘hamburger,’ it’s made by grinding beef cuts and beef trim. It works well in dishes that require crumbles, and typically any leanness of Ground Beef works well in dishes – just be sure to drain any remaining fat after cooking.
- Diced Tomatoes with Green Chiles: Canned ingredient with chopped tomato and medley spiced green chile. The tomatoes are picked at peak ripeness, canned, and mixed with green chiles for a bit more spice. Best used in tacos, chili, queso, soups and casseroles.
- Masa Harina: Spanish for dough, this ‘corn flour’ is made from dried corn kernels cooked in limewater, before being ground. It’s a Latin American ingredient popular in recipes like arepas, tamales or tortillas and also serves a a gluten-free option for those that can’t have regular flour.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This bold and tangy sauce (and condiment) is a blend of vinegar, anchovies, molasses and spices. It’s packed with umami flavor and used to flavor many dishes.

It’s all about preference and what you have on hand. We recommend 80/20 ground beef; it provides a great texture and rich flavor.
-
Can I freeze leftovers?
Yes, place leftover coney sauce in a freezer-safe container with a tightly fitting lid. Freeze for up to 3 months.
-
How is coney sauce different from chili?

Yes! You can prepare the coney sauce and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave.
